Matt Ryan’s wife Sarah Marshall became a Maine basketball legend during playing days at Catherine McCauley High in Falmouth. Her high school accolades include: being twice named the Maine Gatorade Player of the Year, two state titles, being named to three first team all state, and named the Maine Female Athlete of the Year after her junior season. Sarah also played soccer and track. She earned all state honors in those sports as well.
Matt Ryan and wife Sarah Marshall met as student athletes enrolled in the College of Communications at Boston College. They actually met in the weight room during their freshman year, as ridiculous as that sounds. Marshall was a standout point guard when she and Matt Ryan first met and began dating during their sophomore year of school. Sarah played point guard for BC for three seasons, leaving with the second most assists in school history.
The two have been together since then, and Sarah has moved to Atlanta to live with Ryan year round. They were together for so long before marriage that Sarah began expecting the proposal at all of the obvious times. For her birthday one year, the couple went on vacation. At dinner one night, he gave her a present in a little ring-sized box. She assumed it was the ring, only to open it and see a pair of earrings. Sarah found herself ultimately disappointed, and couldn’t shake it.
Lucky for her, later that night – Matt Ryan finally popped the question. He was able to catch her totally off-guard, which was his plan all along. That is what Matt likes to do with defenses as well – only he hasn’t been quite as successful the past couple of seasons. 2016 is off to a great start for Matt, hopefully he keeps it up.
Matt Ryan’s wife Sarah Marshall now works as a sponsorship sales consultant for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream.
