Gregg Popovich’s wife met him back in the 1970’s. He served as assistant coach at the Air Force Academy since he already attended it before, and she also attended. I don’t know exactly when they met since his assistant coach job ran from 1973 to 1979. I assume they met somewhere in the middle of that timespan. He managed to jump ship and become a head coach at Pomona Pitzer in 1979. Erin of course moved to Southern California with him. It’s a big commitment to become involved with a professional coach because you will see them rarely. The amount of work it takes to coach a serious team is immense.
Nevertheless, Gregg Popovich’s wife does her best to calm him down. The media picked up plenty of stories about her advice to him. She reminds him to calm down and present himself in a less prickly manner. He mostly ignores the advice, as we all know from dozens of interview and press conference clips. Erin mostly stays out of any kind of limelight. She gave birth to their kids Jill and Micky Popovich years ago. They grew up and got jobs years ago. Now, Erin spends her time working with charities. She also enjoys a healthy amount of wine with Gregg since they own a vineyard in Oregon.
I should note briefly that their son Micky worked as a teacher at an elementary school in Seattle. West Seattle Blog featured a picture of him in embrace with a young student, both crying on the last day of school. They cried because the school system shut down the school. That all happened in 2009, so I don’t know if Micky continued to teach. Gregg Popovich’s wife almost always stays out of the public eye. However, their daughter Jill told him to get over himself following their loss in the 2013 playoffs. Afterward, Yahoo Sports mentioned Jill said “Poor Greggy can’t lose because he’s special.” Then she asked him to get over himself. Classic Popovich move.
